Origins
Recorded in the spellings of Spaldin and Spalding, this interesting name is of Medieval English origin and is locational from a place called Spalding in Lincolnshire. The derivation of this surname is from the Old English pre 7th Century 'Spaldingas', meaning, members of the tribe of 'Spaldas'. This tribe is mentioned in the 'Tribal Hidage' of the 7th Century (Anglo Saxon Charters) and although the tribal name Spaldas is etymologically obscure, it is thought that they may have migrated from the continent, thus the name may have originated in some place there. Spaldas is presumably derived from the Old High German 'Spartan', meaning a Cleft, or Ravine. This place name appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Spaldyng', and in the Lincolnshire survey of circa 1115 as 'Spaldingis'.
Listed in the 'Names of the Living in Virginia' dated February 16th 1623, are the family of Edward Spaolding, his wife, son and daughter, at 'Flourdien Hundred'. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Gilbert de Spaldingis, which was dated 1175, in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire, during the reign of King Henry II, known as 'The Builder of Churches', 1154-1189.[1]
The spelling Spaulding seems to have been a recent variation, and is present in the colonies (Australia, NZ, USA).
Spalding of Scotland
- Fuedal Barony, 1318. The Ancient and Noble Armorial bearings representing the family of Spalding in Scotland, defined by Sir George Mackenzie High Authority "Or, on a cross az. five crosses crosslet of the first. Crest: A cross crosslet fitchée or. Motto: Hinc mihi salus (Hence my salvation)."
- In Scotland, Clan Spalding is a highland Scottish clan and sept of Clan Murray. The clan does not have a chief recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms so the clan is considered an armigerous clan. The Spalding family lived in Perthshire, Scotland, for several hundred years before 1745, and dispersed to Germany, Sweden, Jamaica, Georgia, Liverpool, Virginia and elsewhere. The Castle of Ashintully was the clan centre in Perthshire.[2]
- There are several Spalding lineage mottos and arms; however, the principal branch were the Spaldings of Ashintully.
- Spalding of Ashintully's Crest: A gateway Proper with the portcullis half raised, Gules
- Spalding of Ashintully's Arms: Or, a two-handed sword paleways Azure
- Spalding of Ashintully's Motto: Nobile Servitium (Service is noble)
Distribution
The name SPAULDING is almost exclusive to Essex, but is seen in large numbers in both Australia - particularly Tasmania - and the USA due to spelling alterations on emigration. The variant SPALDING is older, and can be seen heavily in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and London, with medium density in Cambridgeshire. The variants SPALDINGE and SPAULDINGE have also been found in 16th century records in Worcestershire. A distribution map can be seen here.
